Colchester Royal Grammar School is an 11-18 state selective grammar school that admits boys from Year 7 and has a co-educational Sixth Form. It is one of the top-performing schools in the country and is one of very few state boarding schools, with a family-style boarding house designed for 30 Sixth Form students. The family atmosphere, culture of academic excellence and care for the wellbeing of students are key features of the school.
CRGS is committed to providing a rich education for its students. In 2017, over 90% of A level grades achieved were A*, A or B, with more than 70% at A* or A. Over 30 students achieved three or more grades at A* and gained places at top universities across the world. These results are a testament to the professional attitude of our students and the remarkable level of support that the staff provide.
Care for the individual and extracurricular enrichment complement the emphasis on academic achievement. Under the coordination of the Head of Year, the tutors support and monitor the welfare, academic progress and extracurricular involvement of the students in their groups. In recent years, the school has also made a particular point of developing its support for students with mental and emotional difficulties. The development of character and skills for life matters as much to us as academic success – we aim to be producing the next generation of leaders in society.
The school, which is half a mile from the town centre, stands amongst trees in delightful, mature gardens which are open to all students. There is a mixture of old and new buildings: a school hall with a large stage and an up-to-date sound and lighting system, AV projection system and a pipe organ; gymnasium; heated outdoor swimming pool; attractive restaurant facilities with a dedicated Sixth Form area; music and drama centre; state of the art science blocks comprising ten laboratories for physics, chemistry and biology; computer suites; computers within subject areas which are linked by a network that covers all offices and classrooms; a careers library with excellent computer provision for independent study time; a fine, well-stocked library and resources area; and other specialist rooms.
The extensive playing fields are attractive and include pitches for all major sports – rugby, football and cricket – as well as hard and grass tennis courts, a netball court and a pavilion with changing facilities.
CRGS has an outstanding reputation for extracurricular activities – music and sport are especially strong – and students are encouraged to make full use of the opportunities available to extend their academic learning beyond the classroom.
Admission at 11+ is through selection tests and at 16+ is based on performance at GCSE.
The staff and students look forward to welcoming you to the Sixth Form Open Evening on Tuesday 17th October.
