The North Norfolk Railway operates Steam and Diesel heritage services along the old [email protected] line between Sheringham and Holt via Weybourne. The Railway has over the past two years seen record figures with 2016 reaching 166,000.
The North Norfolk Railway offers all day Rover tickets which allow passengers to get off at the intermediate station Weybourne make use of the access to Sheringham Park and enjoy the natural surroundings of North Norfolk. The services are operated at 50-minute intervals from 0955 departure at Sheringham through to late afternoon. During the shoulder periods of the season (yellow service) there are alternate Diesel and Steam services while at the height of the season and Bank Holidays all services are operated by Steam Locomotive with Diesel being used at the end of the day. The Red service also operates at a 50-minute frequency which allows the Railway to add additional trains such as the vintage train or Cromer diners as it wishes.
During the year a number of special events are featured including Diesel Galas, Steam Galas, Thomas, Dads Army, Beer Festival, Vintage Transport weekend and the famous 40’s event. February 2018 will see the first Peppa Pig event. There is also a week featuring Halloween with its scary grotto followed of course by the Santa specials which operate during December attracting around 8000 visitors. These are on sale from late August book early to secure your choice of date.
As well as the normal operations, the Railway has an Education centre which attracts around a hundred schools a year to the Evacuation days or Aunt Dotty (an old fashioned seaside visit by train). The School visits provide youngsters with a great experience of what life was like in the eras featured.
There are other products which the Railway offers using the dedicated dining train. These range from Sunday Lunches/Evening Diners/ Murder Mysteries and Fish and Chip trains. There are also a limited number of Cromer Dining Trains which provide the opportunity to travel by Steam on the mainline. All of these products are pre-bookable. There are Driver experience courses which feature a day experiencing all the aspects of handling and operating steam locomotives, now supplemented by Signalling experiences and occasional Diesel driving days.
All the functions carried out on the Railway are supported by volunteers. All the Trains/Stations includes shops, buffets and Signal boxes are covered by volunteer labour. Trained staff members can provide back up but without the volunteers the Railway would not be able to operate as it currently does.
The majority of its employed staff are based in Engineering. The Railway provides engineering services to all the Locomotives Steam and Diesel based at the Railway. Running repairs are carried out as required and full overhauls are also performed by a dedicated overhauls department. The latter includes the servicing of Boilers and reconstruction where necessary. The Engineering facilities at the Railway are extensive and offer a full bespoke service to customers.
