Whether you’re local or are looking to enjoy the festive atmosphere of a historic market town, Saffron Walden has plenty to offer this season. We’ve rounded up everything to look forward to in the lead up to Christmas…

Saffron Walden Christmas Light Switch On, 1 December 

Saffron Walden welcomes Christmas in style this season with the annual Christmas light switch on scheduled for Friday 1 December at 6pm. There’ll also be the chance to grab some Christmas presents with late night shopping and entertainment for the whole family with carol singing and of course a visit by Father Christmas. The seasonal market will take place all day.

Christmas & Crafts at Audley End House, Essex

Christmas is a time to get crafting! Head over to Audley End House from 7-8 December for their wreath making course. Using a range of materials sourced from the estate, the team will show you how to make a beautiful wreath. Lunch and all materials are included for £55 per person.

There’s plenty of other things going on at Audley End House this Christmas from carol concerts on 5 December and ‘An Audience with Father Christmas’ every weekend from 25 November until 16/17 December. The fun continues even after we’re stuffed from our Christmas dinner with a Festive Falconry display from 27-29 December. Christmas Shopping in Saffron Walden

One of the best things about Saffron Walden is its stores; fashion boutiques, homewares, a chocolate shop and jewellery and trinkets aplenty – there’s hundreds of Christmas shopping opportunities. If you are looking for gift for friends and family, why not head on down to the Christmas Gift Fair taking place in the Town Hall from the 2 – 3 December open from 9am – 8.30pm.

Don’t forget to support your local food producers during the festive season, especially as Saffron Walden is surrounded by them. Traders recently came together in an initiative to help promote the town and its market. From Coles Christmas puddings to Salix Farm Free Range Turkeys, there’s no need to pop to the supermarket this year. Enjoy a locally produced Christmas dinner.

Audley End Miniature Railway

The Snowman at Saffron Hall, 10 December

Walk in a winter wonderland with this beautiful performance of The Snowman. The seasonal screening is accompanied live by the Sinfonia and is an ideal festive treat for children of all ages. Tickets priced from £15 – £25. More details at saffronhall.com

Audley End Miniature Railway, 25 November – 24 December

If you’ve not had a chance to visit Audley End Miniature Railway during the festive season before, then make sure you visit this year for a to a magical family day out. Take the Santa Express into the woods to visit Father Christmas and his elves in their woodland grotto. Children will also have the opportunity to visit the craft area and write a letter to Father Christmas and post it in the festive box. Known as one of ‘the magical Christmas experience in Essex’, this event is hugely popular so be quick to boo your tickets! More information available at https://www.audleyendrailway.co.uk/
