The Cambridge Scene: 5 Things to Do in Cambridge this Christmas

There really is no better place to enjoy the festive season than historical Cambridge. Spending time in our beautiful city at this time of year evokes a sense of stepping back in time to savour the traditions and customs that make Cambridge so uniquely magical.

The annual carol service ‘Carols from King’s’ held on Christmas Eve at Cambridge University, is one of the most famous carol services in the world and is available for anyone to attend should they have the patience to stand in the queue! People begin queuing at 7.30am and the college porters count the number of people joining the line. Once there are as many lined up as there are seats available in the chapel, the porters tell new arrivals that they’re unlikely to be seated.

If you are planning to be part of this Christmas treat, do dress up warmly because the doors to the chapel don’t open until 1.30pm. The service starts at 3pm and ends at about 4.30pm.

When in Cambridge why not order a delicious hot chocolate from one of the cosy cafes only a stone’s throw from King’s College. Fitzbillies is particularly lovely (although you really are spoilt for choice of venues with extensive menus including vegan and gluten free options) and is famed for its Instagram friendly exterior; a great photo opp and awesome cakes!

Gift shopping in Cambridge is an extremely Dickensian experience as one can meander the cobbled paths of Trinity Street, Trumpington and the colourful market. Take time to window shop and pop in to welcoming boutiques to purchase speciality food treats and presents for loved ones. With the city’s superb Park and Ride scheme you really are able to shop until you drop!

A city made for the discerning palate, there is an abundance of restaurants to choose from. The Pint Shop (Peas Hill) has everything from a range of 23 keg and cask beers, a gin of the day and a menu which includes some of the best traditional fayre and insanely good chips and gravy! The warm interior and friendly team make this venue a real ‘must visit’.

If you have time, visit the Varsity Hotel for a stunning view of Cambridge from their stylish rooftop bar. Tempting you with an eggnog or mulled wine, there is surely no better place to relax and unwind after a festive afternoon in such a picturesque city!
