6 things to do in Cambridge this Autumn

Autumn is here, and along with the changing of the leaves and the darker nights this season brings a host of exciting events to the beautiful city of Cambridge. Here’s my round up of the must see events that you won’t want to miss!

Festival of ideas, 16-29 October 2017


Thousands of visitors will flock to Cambridge University’s Festival of Ideas with this year’s theme being ‘Truth’. The festival now in its 10th year is a highlight in Cambridge’s cultural calendar and the perfect opportunity to explore the arts, humanities and social sciences. There are hundreds of events for both adults and children with many of them being free including debates, workshops, talks, exhibitions and performances. www.festivalofideas.cam.ac.uk

Cambridge Film Festival, 19 – 26 October 2017

This eight day film festival celebrates international film and is the place to be to discover must see independent films, documentaries and shorts.  Gain fascinating insights from behind the camera by attending a Q+A with the filmmakers or learn and develop new skills at one of the fantastic workshops. www.cambridgefilmfestival.org.uk


Apple Day is back at Cambridge University Botanic Garden, Sunday 22 October

A bumper crop of apple-related activities including: apple identification and advice; apple tasting of over thirty varieties; a huge variety of locally produced, delicious edibles for sale as well as family activities; guided Garden seasonal highlight tours; live music; pop-up food trucks and surprise walkabout characters to keep the kids entertained. 

Entry to the Botanic Garden on Apple Day requires the purchase of an Apple Day ticket, priced £3, in addition to normal Garden admission/Friends’ membership. Visitors are strongly advised to buy Apple Day tickets in advance at the Garden ticket offices or at www.botanic.cam.ac.uk

Cambridge Fireworks Display, 4 November 2017

Wrap up warm and head down to the Midsummer Common to witness a spectacular display of jaw dropping fireworks.  The event also includes a variety of food stands, a giant bonfire and a fun packed funfair for the whole family to enjoy. www.cambridgelivetrust.co.uk/city-events/bonfire-night

Cambridge Art Fair, 9 – 12 November 2017

Art lovers will love this annual art fair bringing together a huge selection of both modern and contemporary fine art. Taking place in the heart of the city at the Guildhall it features beautiful artwork from local and UK wide galleries and dealers. www.cambridgeartfair.com

Cambridge Literacy Winter Festival, 24- 26 November 2017

Now in its 14th year, this hugely popular event showcases writers from a wide range of genres. Highlights include a host of recognisable names discussing their latest books including the hilarious comedian Sarah Millican showcasing her new must read  book ‘How to be a Champion’. www.cambridgeliteraryfestival.com
