Plan your trip to Saffron Walden; a historic market town in Essex.

Saffron Walden combines the best of both worlds. It’s where old meets new. You can often feel as though you’ve been transported to a time gone by while doing your grocery shopping. A wander around the cobbled streets, while popping into independent boutiques and admiring the historic architecture is a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

Things to do in Saffron Walden

The Market

Stop by on market day. Tuesday’s is more traditional mainly aimed at locals but on Saturday the buzzing market has a cosmopolitan edge, selling local produce, antiques, flowers, crafts and more. Buy a bottle of wine and a tasty loaf and sit down at a barrel at the fishmonger stand where you can share seafood platters. www.saffronwalden.gov.uk/markets

Saffron Walden Common

Visit the manicured lawns of The Common. Great for picnics, balls games and dog walks. There’s also a newly refurbished playground and turf maze! It’s home to pop up events and markets throughout the year. Off the Beaten Truck, a pop up street food market, takes place every Thursday, 5-8pm.  www.visitsaffronwalden.gov.uk

Hidden in the back streets of the town, the grade II listed space consists of seven interlinked gardens and popular hedge maze. The Turf Labyrinth, another maze which twists and turns, is sure to be a hit with children.

Audley End Miniature Railway

A massive hit with families, the railway trails through the forest where children can spot teddies that live in the woods. There’s also an Enchanted Fairy and Elf Walk and picnic and play area – great for when the warmer weather arrives! There are seasonal events too! Book your tickets.

Saffron Screen

The town features an independent community cinema, which has a full programmes of films, screenings and concerts. www.saffronscreen.com

Where to shop in Saffron Walden

If you have a love of all things fashion, then you’ll adore Saffron Walden’s independent boutique scene. Dotted throughout the town are stylish stores housing high end designers and relatively unknown brands. Stop by Ruby Roomsfor the latest fashions or Blue for timeless classic style staples and accessories.

If it’s home décor or a special present you need visit Talents; a small store filled with quirky items and gift ideas, while the Corner Cupboard is great for fine jewellery and stylish home furnishings. For a home overhaul visit Lottie Mutton, which offers interior design services and home accessories.

Among the cobbled streets and crooked buildings, you’ll also find independent wine shops, a pet store, interior designers and gourmet food stores.

Restaurants in Saffron Walden

Saffron Walden’s crooked timber clad buildings are home to a number of pubs. The Eight Bells is a stylish gastro pub; sink into one of the buttery leather armchairs with a drink or book a table in the oak beamed restaurant. The Market Place is a great option for cocktails and tapas.

Tea shops and cafes in Saffron Walden

After all that shopping you’ll need to rest your tired soles and where better than in one of Saffron Walden’s cosy coffee shops and cafes. On almost every corner there’s a place to pop in for cup of tea and cake.

There’s the busy Courtyard which has outdoor seating year round, Café Cou Cou with its windows stacked with cake and Tea Amo for afternoon tea. At at the top of interiors store, Angela Reed, is a cafe with a terrace overlooking Saffron Walden’s crooked rooftops. Bicicletta is a popular stop for cyclists and residents with its range of brunch options.

For those with a sweet tooth, you’ll be pleased to know Saffron Walden now boasts its very own chocolate shop, Hill St. Chocolate aromas fill the air and you can watch the chocolatiers rustle up the next sweet treat. It’s great for a strong coffee or hot chocolate.
