The Cambridge Scene: Christmas in the City

Christmas in Cambridge

attractionsThis month Cambridge blogger Tracey Dean tells us how she’s planning to spend Christmas in the city

Growing up in Cambridge Christmas has always been my favourite time of the year. From the festive cheer to the twinkling fairy lights Cambridge always has a magical and charming Christmas atmosphere for all to enjoy.

For me it all starts with going to Scotsdales, my local garden centre, to pick out the perfect traditional real Christmas tree. I love how it makes my house smell of Christmas and it’s always hard to resist buying lots of decorations for it. From glittering stars to glass bells I tend to buy more and more each year!

Once my home has been transformed into a winter wonderland it’s time to get Christmas shopping! I love how Cambridge has the big department stores like John Lewis where there’s something for everyone but also the little independent shops such as Chocolat Chocolat to pick up some handmade chocolate gifts.

Events taking place across the city also really get me in the festive mood and it’s a tradition of mine to go to the ice rink that appears in the city centre on Parkers Piece each year. It’s the only time I skate so the first few laps usually consist of me holding on for dear life but I’m soon gliding away enjoying the Christmas atmosphere. Last time I went they had lots of food vans next to the rink where I had the best salted caramel churros and a nice hot chocolate to warm up with.

One of my favourite Christmas outings has to be seeing the Winter Lights at Anglesey Abbey. Tickets untitled-1-of-1always get snapped up very quickly because it’s such a great event that sees the gardens illuminated with spectacular lights. While walking round the one and half mile route there’s plenty of entertainment along the way such as live music and also delicious food.

I can’t wait to continue my Christmas traditions this year and also discover some exciting new ones. Have a very merry Christmas and best wishes for 2017.

The exciting festive season has arrived and Cambridge has plenty of seasonal events taking place this month to get you in the Christmas spirit! Here’s my top picks:

The North Pole Cambridge, Friday 18 November – Wednesday 4 January 2017

Parkers Piece, Cambridge, CB2 1AA

Wrap up warm as you skate on the 600sqm open air ice rink or enjoy the many other attractions which include a fairground complete with carousels and dodgems! There’s also plenty of food stalls and an undercover alpine bar, the perfect place to pick up a festive glass of mulled wine.

King's College Cambridge ChoirA Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at Kings College, Saturday 24th December 2016

King College, King’s Parade, Cambridge, CB2 1ST

This world famous Christmas Eve service takes place in the spectacular candle lit chapel at the prestigious Kings College. Tickets for this incredibly popular event are available by queuing with the queue forming a day or so before the service! Those lucky enough to attend will hear the angelic voices of the choir as they sing your favourite traditional Christmas carols alongside readings from the bible.

Christmas Grotto at Scotsdales Garden Centre, Sunday 20 November 2016 – Saturday 24 December 2016

120 Cambridge Road, Great Shelford, CB22 5JT

Create a special memory for the family by taking them to meet Father Christmas in his snowy Christmas grotto. This magical winter wonderland is the perfect place for the little ones to tell Father Christmas their Christmas wishes and take away a present of their choice.
