Hot Tubs Boats at Lakeside, Essex

Winter doesn’t usually conjure up the idea of water activities, but that’s about to change with the newly launched hot tub boat experience at Lakeside in Essex.

Visitors to Lakeside can now take a leisurely ride around Alexandra Lake in a floating hot tub. Yes, really!

Skuna Boats have launched the UK’s first hot tub boat experience at the Essex shopping and leisure centre. Heated to a balmy 38°C, the wood-fired hot tubs contain fresh filtered water which is changed after each trip to ensure the highest hygiene standards.

Located a short distance from the Ferris wheel and Broadwalk, the candy-striped changing rooms sit on the deck while the steaming boat beckons. The changing rooms feature heaters to keep you warm while you change into your swimwear and lockers for valuables.

From the changing rooms, it’s a few short steps to the hot tub. Leave your towel and flipflops in the storage container then slip into the bath-like water.

The electric boat is easy to drive, but you’ll be given instructions before you set off. Alcohol is allowed onboard and there’s even an ice cooler for drinks, however the captain must stay sober to ensure no drink driving laws are broken.

Eastlife visited on a sunny, late autumn day. The self-conscious thoughts of being in swimwear at a public place soon slipped away as we dipped our toes into the steaming water. We floated around the lake’s island, watching the swans, while sipping Prosecco and it was absolute bliss!

Though we took this as an opportunity to relax, each boat seats up to seven people so it’s perfect for celebrations, occasions and even half term adventure for ages 12+. The experience lasts 75-minutes and is priced from £32 per person. A bar is set to open at the site soon and spring will see the addition of BBQ boats too!

A few questions we’ve been asked since our visit. Did you get cold? No, the wood burner ensures the water stays toasty the duration of the experience. Could people see you from the Broadwalk? No, as you sit low in the hot tub, it simply looks like you are in a boat. Would you do it again? Absolutely, 100%!

Skuna Boats are open 365 days a year so it’s an experience for all weathers. A Nordic tradition, the hot tub boat is probably best enjoyed on colder days for a real wintery treat. Already a popular experience at London’s Canary Wharf, the hot tub boats at Lakeside are guaranteed to become a must-do event of the season.

During November, Skuna is launching Boat out to Help Out, where you can enjoy 50% off all hot tubs Monday-Wednesday. Pricing: £225 Sunday-Friday / £250 on Saturdays
