The ultimate spa day in Hertfordshire. Indoor and outdoor swimming pool, sauna, steam, relaxation and more. Experience it all at the newly refurbished Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House, St Albans.
If you’re looking for a luxury spa day or mini break, check-in at Sopwell House, St Albans. If you’ve previously visited or read about Sopwell House, forget everything you know. Things have changed. After a £14million refurbishment, the Cottonmill Spa is looking shiny and new. There’s a redesigned layout, the edition of ‘The Club’, state-of-the-art gym and an impressive treatment list.
Use of the facilities at ‘The Club’ is available for an extra fee. Its earthy tones and garden views create a calming ambience. Lie back on the super soft loungers pool side while listening to the sounds of the water.
Cosy up with a book in a swinging chair. Sweat it out in the modern sauna with its glass frontage offering blissful views of the landscaped garden. Breathe in and relax in the salt and botanical steam rooms. The heated hydrotherapy pool extends to the outdoors where you can sit back and relax. Or as I did during my visit, enjoy the rain splashing down while soaking in the steaming water.
Split over two floors, ‘The Club’ also has hot stone beds, a deep relaxation room, tea facilities, waiter service should you fancy a glass of Prosecco and its own changing room, which features Elemis products and Dyson hairdryers.
‘The Club’ has a real sense of exclusivity and wellness. A limited number of guests are allowed meaning you can relax in a peaceful and calming atmosphere at all times. It has firmly put Sopwell House on the map as one of the best spas in the East of England.
Treatments include a long list of massage and facials. However, more unusual options are the sand and water treatments. Guests can immerse themselves in hot sand to help medical conditions while lying on an amber and quartz crystal bed to ease tension and stimulate cells.
I chose a water treatment; the ‘Elemis exotic frangipani body scrub with wrap and vichy shower’. The 60-minute treatment features a massage and body scrub, concluding with relaxation under the shower jets positioned above the bed. My skin felt fully hydrated and refreshed.
My visit to Sopwell House included lunch, dinner and an overnight stay on a bed and breakfast basis.
My accommodation was located in The Mews; an exclusive collection of suites in a private gated dwelling, opposite the hotel. Rooms are luxurious; think plush king size beds, fire place and lounge area. Some suites feature their own secluded garden with a hot tub. The Mews Suites are a little pricier than the main hotel but certainly worth every penny if you’re looking for a blissful break.
The Club at Cottonmill Spa at Sopwell House really is a slice of spa heaven!
Price for a Mews room start from £359 per night on a B&B basis.
