Zena Leech-Calton rounds up the latest from the Norwich food scene, including a ‘secret menu’, the best burger in Norwich and vegan restaurants.

A new year, a new resolution – is it just me or does everyone have foodie goals? Like, go out for more roast dinners, try all the Thai restaurants in Norfolk, put on more food events and try to lose weight!

January 2020 saw the launch of Secret Menu Norfolk; my free promotion, where I’ve convinced 100 restaurants, cafes and bars all over Norfolk to offer an off-menu dish. Full details are on my website www.lovenorwichfood.co.uk – for the full list of who’s taking part, what’s on offer and the cost. You’ll find cocktails, savoury doughnuts, vegan shakes and sharing waffle platters to name a few.

Burger at the York – Crispy Pork Belly Burger

With 18 burgers on the menu including vegan, vegetarian, belly pork, breakfast, lamb and duck versions, I thought I would make it competitive.  You can now vote up to 5-stars for the ones you try. There’s a massive trophy for the winning restaurant with the most stars and a herby prize for one of the voters in #BattleoftheBurger

There are a few restaurants opening this month too. Three Diamonds on Upper St Giles Street, offering Mediterranean food and a French bistro L’ Hexagone on Lower Goat Lane.

However, we have suffered the loss of two bars Platform 12 and Panda. Plus, the closure of Lasagneria on the market. Unfortunately, later last year the lovely Les Garrigues shut down on Upper St Giles but on a good point Kofra Coffee Shop took it over and moved from their little shop on the tip of Unthank Road.

The start of the year is always a quiet for food news with New Year diets in full swing, along with dry January. But Veganary is in full swing with Norwich being the best place to go vegan in the UK. Many local restaurants are embracing the accolade, with separate vegan menus.

There has never been a bigger choice with a good scooped double handful of vegetarian and vegan restaurants in Norwich alone. Plus, we have Tofurei under our vegan belts with its own tofu factory – it can only get bigger.

Well that’s it from me for this month with lots brewing for the rest of 2020.

If you want a little tease, here are just three words: ‘Food Challenge Norwich’.

If you want to find out more keep your eyes peeled or toss me some truffles!
