Picnic by the punts at The Backs in Cambridge. Not only does this tranquil setting allow you to watch the punts go by, but you will also have the best view of the famous Kings College. As well as being a beautiful place to sit, there are also many walks around the area. If you fancy a go at punting, some of the punt companies such as Lets Go Punting, can provide you with a gourmet picnic for before, after or during a tour, at an additional cost.

Wander through the Flatford paintings, as you walk the same footsteps as eighteenth-century landscape artist, John Constable. This was a favourite spot of his and you will see why. The serene setting is perfect for a picnic on the river bank, as well as having many things to see and do. Take a look at the Grade I listed building, Flatford Mill which lies in the heart of the hamlet or take the four to seven-mile walk to explore the picturesque Stour Valley. Free activity packs are on offer for the children or take a boat trip along the River Stour to keep them entertained.

The secluded sand dunes at Holme next the Sea are the perfect place to enjoy a spot of lunch. The dunes are home to numerous wildlife species, including butterflies, dragonflies and natter jack toads, as well as being superbly located on Norfolk’s northwest corner, where The Wash meets the North Sea. This attracts hundreds of migrating birds, great from some bird watching! The coastal walk is an open wilderness of sand dunes, mud flats, salt marshes, water meadows and pine forests, as well as a pretty much deserted beach if you’re after some privacy.

Located along the River Great Ouse, between the historic market town of St Ives, and Huntingdon, Houghton Mill is a wonderful place by the water to have a picnic. You can explore inside the eighteenth-century water mill, which is the oldest working mill on the River Great Ouse today, or hire a canoe to pass through the meadows and historic towns nearby. Equally, saunter along the river bank, and explore the stunning surroundings by foot.

Wells-next-the-sea is a preserved Area of Outstanding Beauty, and it is a wonderful place for a picnic. Multicoloured huts border the long sweeping beach, with a large area designated for dogs. As well as the option to picnic by the sea, you also have the pinewood forest which surrounds a beautiful lake, just a stone’s throw away. With the option of a ponder through the pine trees, or stroll across the seafront, there are hundreds of picnic spots to choose from.

Picnic at the highest point in Bedfordshire at Dunstable Downs. With large open spaces, and breath-taking views of the landscape below, there are plenty of places for you to throw down your blanket and park yourself down for a picnic. Take to the hills for one of the many walks, whether you prefer a leisurely walk at the lower level hills, or fancy a challenge, there is sure to be something for everyone. Find the hidden natural playground of Chute Wood, where the children can learn all about the woodland wildlife, build dens or go bug hunting.

Bring a long a picnic to the picturesque wetland of the Rye Meads Nature Reserve. Situated beside the River Lee, it is a firm favourite for walkers, birdwatchers and photographers. With many lookouts and nature trails this is the perfect place to learn about all about wildlife. There are benches and picnic tables for you to enjoy your lunch surrounded by nature.
