There’s a new restaurant on the block in Hertford and it has residents queueing out the door!
If you’re looking for a good time with friends then book a table at The Hummingbird in Hertford; the latest hotspot for drinks and dining in the Hertfordshire market town.
The pub and restaurant features stylish, British inspired décor, accessorised with bird cages suspended from the ceiling and greenery and plants throughout, creating a warm and natural vibe. The bar area is spacious with cosy booths, perfect for groups of friends, while the restaurant is a smaller and more intimate dining space. (Top tip: Ensure you book a table at the restaurant as tables in the bar area would mean eating among the crowds of drinkers at weekends).
Like the space itself, the menu is large and varied with British influenced cuisine with a modern twist. Expect juicy steaks, burgers and fish and chips – I saw this whizz by and it was huge! There’s plenty for fish lovers too; seabass, smoked mackerel and a delicious seafood linguine which I enjoyed for my main course (priced £12.75). The specials board changes regularly. I opted for pulled pork mini burgers to start, which were absolutely divine!
One of the highlights of The Hummingbird is that no one is left off the menu. It caters for meat and fish lovers, and vegetarians and vegans too with more than one dish as an option. My vegan friend dined with me. She tucked into a colourful starter of beetroot hummus and flat bread (priced £5.50) followed by a tasty tandoori cauliflower (priced £11.50).
We chose the vegan chocolate brownie (priced £5.75) and vanilla rice pudding (price £5.50) for dessert, which was a perfect sweet finish to the meal. The food was great and reasonably priced, though the service was a little slow. I think this was purely down to teething problems and the fact it was extremely busy.
There was also a vegan wine option; a rare occurrence in many pubs and restaurants. Though despite this foresight and an impressive gin list, I was shocked to see the bar were using plastic straws. For a new opening in a trendy town, you’d expect the establishment to be more sustainably aware. However I have been told this is due to change – let’s hope so!
I visited on a Friday evening and the bar and restaurant were buzzing; a good sign for this newly opened restaurant. If you’re looking for a fun and lively night out with friends then visit on a Friday or Saturday evening. If you’d like a relaxed and quieter dining experience then it’s best to avoid weekends and dine mid-week. The Hummingbird serves breakfast, lunch and offers a ‘Date & Steak Night’ on Wednesdays.
