Restaurant Review: The Millworks, Cambridge

Millworks Cambridge The Millworks in Cambridge

Located in a former historic Cambridge mill on Newnham Road, the The Millworks, owned by Cambs Cuisine, has breathed life into the building creating a vibrant and modern brasserie where diners can eat alongside the the restored water mill, which after many years is back in action!

Now I know I was there to review the food, but the interior is what caught my eye and I couldn’t write this without giving it a mention. Exposed brickwork and pipes, industrial style lighting, copper piping details, white concrete booths and a working water mill, the interior design ticks all the boxes for a modern feel. My phone is now full of pictures for inspiration for my own home; concrete seating in my garden and exposed copper pipes in my bathroom have been on my wish list for a while!

Similar to Cambs Cuisine’s Smokeworks, in fact it’s the same interior designer, the restaurant also Millworks Cambridge features a service switch at each table. When you’re ready to order simply flick the switch and a waiter will promptly be with you.

Open for brunch, lunch and dinner, the menu has been designed with sharing in mind. We sat down for dinner on a Thursday evening, when the restaurant was buzzing with couples and groups of friends.

The menu offers a good selection of dishes for both meat lovers and vegetarians, and to my surprise had a lot of fish options too. To start my husband and I tucked into a bowl of mussels and BBQ aubergine baba ganoush with grilled flatbread which was a nice light start to the sharing platter we ordered for the main.

Cambridge restaurants The main menu offers a choice of fish including cod and trout, salads, various meat dishes from the charcoal grill and a tasty selection of sides. You can also choose from two sharing plates; the meat fest or chicken fest. We went for the chicken; thyme, lime and garlic BBQ chicken, southern fried chicken wings, spiced mango chicken thighs, salad, celeriac slaw, BBQ corn, fries, pickles and three sauces – it’s safe to say we had to pass on dessert!

Though had we had room after our chicken coma I would have loved to have tried the gooey chocolate brownie with salted cameral ice cream or the ‘Rupture Rapture’, the ultimate sharing dessert with ice cream, brownie, smashed Malteasers, marshmallows, doughnut and other sweet treats!

Whether you love food or just need some interior inspiration, a visit to the Millworks is certainly worth it.
