Review: The Northgate Opens in Bury St Edmunds

Eastlife’s editor, Emma Kemsley, visits new restaurant, The Northgate in Bury St Edmunds.

Yesterday (Thursday 24 November 2016) saw the eagerly anticipated opening of The Northgate in Bury St Edmunds.

 

Offering a restaurant, bar and bedrooms, The Northgate is the fourth addition to The Chestnut Group’s rapidly expanding portfolio of stylish eateries across East Anglia. At the event, group managing director Philip Turner expressed his excitement and passion for the growing economy of the region and his confidence to do business in this part of the country.

A warm and inviting restaurant awaits, and although there are 10 individually styled bedrooms, The Northgate does not consider itself a hotel. Instead The Chestnut Group are keen to label the establishment as a “house” – a brand new concept where all are welcome for drinks, breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and of course a goodnights sleep!

Bury St Edmunds hotel

Throughout soft hues, country style décor mixed with modern touches add to the warm and inviting environment. Bedrooms are named after 18th and 19th century Suffolk politicians, you’ll find quirky fireplaces in the dining rooms and an exclusive chefs table, which seats up to 12, and will be available for an eight course tasting menu in the New Year.

The biggest hit of The Northgate is sure to be its signature cocktails and food – and there’s plenty of it! Food is served from breakfast onwards offering a variety of dishes throughout the day. We sipped on cocktails devised by mixologist Ash, inspired by the Abbey Gardens, before sitting down to sample dishes from the menu.

Chef Dan Grigg spoke of his desire to create great food, and that he did. At the pre-opening we sampled two types of open sandwiches on sourdough bread with pulled pork and caramelized apple, and a sticky beef, red onion and horseradish option.

Our taste buds were tantalised with chilled lollipop chicken satays, ham croquettes and crayfish fishcakes with lentils and fish foam. For the main dish we tucked into a succulent rump of lamb with water chestnuts and bok choi.

With just enough room left it was onto a light smoked banana soufflé in which we poured salted caramel sauce. Good food mastered, Chef Dan Grigg couldn’t resist showing his culinary talents with dry ice, gels and foam!

We left feeling content, full and excited to see what’s in-store for the next Chestnut Group opening – watch this space!
