Review: The Glassworks Spa at The Varsity Hotel, Cambridge

De-stress with a half day spa in Cambridge

Never before has selfcare been so important. As our lives get increasingly busy with work and social demands, it’s nice to take some time for ourselves. If you need some time alone or want to step away from a screen, a spa is the perfect escape. If you live in the city of Cambridge or in the vicinity and need a couple hours of peace and quiet then The Glassworks Spa at The Varsity Hotel is a blissful retreat.

Tucked away on Thompsons Lane, the spa is located in a separate entrance at the side of The Varsity Hotel. Staff are welcoming and there’s an air of relaxation the moment you step through the door. A robe, towel and slippers are provided and there’s plenty of space and lockers available in the warm, dimly lit changing rooms.

Start your morning or afternoon of pampering with a work out in the state-of-the-art gym, located on the first floor. The gym is filled with a good selection of equipment and is spacious enough for floor mat workouts if that’s more your thing. I had every intention of stopping by, however instead I opted for extra time in the spa. I don’t take much convincing to skip a work out.

The spa itself is softly lit in pink and blue tones and features a sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi. Cosy chairs line the edge of the facilities if you need to take a few moments to read in peace. The Jacuzzi itself is one of the main draws of this spa. Centrally located, it overlooks the river Cam and you can watch the punts stroll pass through one-way glass.

Spa packages at The Glassworks feature a treatment as well as use of the facilities. I enjoyed a ‘luxury combination day’ which included a 25-minute neck and shoulder massage and 25-minute facial (priced £80). Bliss!

I was delighted to find out the spa uses Elemis products, my favourite go to brand for beauty cosmetics. The facial was wonderful and used a selection of pro-collagen moisturisers and oils.

After coming around from my deep relaxation, heading back to the changing room and stepping back out into the bustling city, I vowed that I would make this a monthly occurrence. It was a lovely experience to take time for myself on a Friday morning, and I encourage everyone to do the same!

Spa packages at The Varsity Hotel and Spa start from £55. The full range of treatments can be viewed at www.thevarsityhotel.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/varsity-spa-brochure.pdf
