Galvin at the Green Man: an ideal dog-friendly pub
Walking around the pretty lanes of Howe Street, Great Waltham it’s easy to see why the Green Man pub has been a favourite for locals and visitors for over 700 years! Now completely refurbished by the Galvin Restaurant Group headed up by Essex-born brothers and chefs Chris and Jeff Galvin, it includes a beautiful glass partition area that overlooks the terrace and garden. It made the perfect venue for a dog-friendly lunch for my husband Chris and I plus our Border Terrier Buster.
The front of house staff, including head receptionist Lucy, were helpful and welcoming and gave us the option of having a table in the cosily decorated pub restaurant or out in the gardens where there were plenty of sturdy wooden tables and umbrellas.
Food at the Green Man, Chelmsford
We opted for the garden as it was such a nice day and were happy to sip on an ice cold Prosecco while we made our choice from the lunch menu. Recently voted the Best Pub in East of England by a national magazine, the menu was big enough to have a good choice but not too big you’d doubt it could all be freshly cooked. And we weren’t disappointed – my asparagus with lemon mayonnaise was tender and sweet and Chris’s mackerel salad had masses of tangy flavour.
Buster made his own choice from the special doggy treats jar and had a bowl of water bought to the table. Our main course was just as tasty: I opted for the smoked haddock with mustard mash and Chris’s Dingley Dell pork chop filled the whole plate! Buster was happy to chew on the bone once we’d finished.
Chris and I found room for treacle tart and clotted cream and super yummy rhubarb and ginger sorbet. As well as the pub bar where you can have lunch and dinner the restaurant is perfect for a stylish lunch or dinner – during the week there is a special lunch menu from £12.50 for two courses with a complimentary glass of Prosecco.
Galvin at the Green Man also has four family rooms that hold up to 12 guests and sponsored by various local businesses including Essex County Cricket Club and the Adnams Brewery where you can “host a roast” on any Sunday lunch or evening. To keep it buzzing for the locals, there are regular movie nights with free popcorn and popular quiz nights.
Dog friendly pubs in Essex
Lucy who has been working at the venue since it opened in November says: “As well as regular bookings we want the venue to be welcoming for walk-ins too which is why it has a dog-friendly policy. There are plenty of nice walks in and around the area with views of the river and dogs are fine to come into the pub or the gardens with water and treats always provided.”
Prices are reasonable too for such a special pub venue and we’ve already decided to make the trip back for a special Sunday roast very soon!
