Secret Norfolk Gali, Norwich

Secret Norfolk: Life in a Fine County

And now for something completely different…

Curry has become a staple cuisine in Britain, and a trip to the curry house is perhaps almost as ingrained in our society as a trip to the chippie. Indian Fine Dining though, until recently, was a concept reserved mostly for Londoners, as it was yet to find its way to Norfolk. However, foodies no longer need to travel for the experience (hoorah!) as a new restaurant has opened its doors in Norwich and is welcoming  diners to experience exquisite flavour combinations and the most subtlest of spicing.

As true lovers of Indian cuisine, my husband and I could not wait to visit, so last month we tried out the six-course tasting menu. Having recently turned vegan earlier this year I was initially concerned this might be an issue, but the chefs at Gali were not only knowledgeable but incredibly accommodating, adapting all dishes on the six-course menu to suit my dietary requirements.

Service was good; dishes were promptly cleared and the next course was brought swiftly out. Our waiter gave an explanation of the dish as he brought them out and each course was as impressive as the next. If I had to pick favourites however it would have to be the Vegetable Chat Massala and the Tava Tofu.

Fine dining is not a concept that most people would immediately associate with Indian cuisine in Norfolk but it works. And, it works on every level. We were treated to a meal that left us feeling indulgent and inspired. Mostly though, we were surprised that our preconceptions of what to expect had been so radically shaken! It was an unforgettable experience and one that we will definitely repeat.

Inspired by traditional authentic Bangladeshi cuisine, Gali strives to reinterpret and rework traditional Indian dishes into creative, contemporary cuisine. You will find tastes of well-known dishes in Massalas and Kurmas, but as chef and owner, Shuhel Ali, was keen to state, Gali is not a curry house!

So, leave your perceptions of Indian cuisine at the door and open your mind and your palette up to trying something a little bit different!

If you’re looking for somewhere slightly different to dine, or you just want to impress your all-important dinner date, Gali is definitely worth a visit. To make a booking, call 01603 627007 or visit http://galifinedining.co.uk
