The best cocktail bars in Norwich
Nicole Ranaweera lists her favourite places for a drink or two…
Norfolk born and bred, I love this county; its quirks, eccentricities and hidden gems, and I really do love nothing more than spending an evening within the walls of our fine city. With such an abundance of bars and pubs to choose from though, where do you go for a great evening out? It was hard to narrow it down, but I give you my top 5 fave haunts…
- The Birdcage 23 Pottergate, Norwich (http://www.thebirdcagenorwich.co.uk)
Previously a very traditional pub, The Birdcage is a million miles away from the pub it was in the 80s & 90s. With a beautiful interior and vibrant atmosphere, this pub not only hosts events that range from life drawing to live music, but also plays gallery to some fantastic street art.
- The Bicycle Shop, 17 St Benedict’s Street, Norwich (http://thebicycleshopcafe.com)
Once quite literally a bicycle shop, this funky café bar can no longer sell you a bike. Instead head on in for food, live music and drinks in a chilled but buzzing atmosphere.
- The Playhouse Bar, 42-58 St George’s Street, Norwich (http://www.theplayhousebar.co.uk)
Another great quirky bar, The Playhouse plays host to live music, guest DJs plus the Red Wall Exhibition space. Let’s also not forget the lovely courtyard terrace and the amazing Ceilingopolis! Don’t forget to look up whilst you’re waiting for your drink!
- 4. Franks Bar, 19 Bedford Street, Norwich (http://www.franksbar.co.uk)
Franks is a fantastically quirky little café-bar, right in the heart of Norwich. Like most of my favourite bars and pubs it’s small, but perfectly formed! If you’re after a place that has chilled playlists, a great atmosphere and friendly staff, this is the place to go.
- 5. The Plough, 58 St Benedict’s Street, Norwich (http://theploughnorwich.co.uk)
Formerly a slightly shady establishment, The Plough was reborn thanks to The Grain Brewery and truly has become a real city gem. Cosy in the winter, the beautiful (and surprisingly large) beer garden out the back is perfect for summer drinking.
