Trendy cafes, concept stores and independent boutiques – it’s all in Woodbridge, Suffolk
There’s something special about Woodbridge. It’s one of those towns that has managed to retain its character and Suffolk appeal yet has a contemporary edge, making it a cool coastal getaway for city dwellers.
Wander through the cobbled streets and past pastel coloured houses and you’ll find trendy coffee shops with their artisan coffee beans, homemade treats and their own stamp on brunch. Dotted between the cafes, eateries and pubs, there’s a good selection of independent boutiques. Woodbridge is a great location for finding one off items or beautifully crafted handmade goods.
At a time when the high street is struggling, it’s great to see Woodbridge is thriving, and though stores will come and go, it’s latest addition, New Street Market, has added a new dimension to its shopping offerings, turning an old building into new and happening store.
A concept store, which brings together lifestyle aspirations alongside a curated selection of products, New Street Market has been launched by local business woman Sam Denny Hodson. Taking a leap of faith and saying goodbye to her town store after four years, Sam breathed new life into a building that was in desperate need of repair.
“I have lived in Woodbridge for the last 10 years and I had often visited this huge, gorgeous building which had fallen into disrepair after many years of trading as an antique shop,” says Sam.
“I’d made many offers to the owners but never been successful, so I took a lease on another shop in the town. While this was great, I wanted to change things up a bit and had seen the dire state of UK retail due to the dreaded B word – Brexit! I’ve always thought that when things get really tough, it’s time to be brave…what have you got to lose? So when the building finally came up for sale I went for it.”
With a huge space to fill, Sam saw the opportunity to give small and new creative businesses a platform to sell their products. “I thought of what I would love to see in my dream store. As I make my own clothing collection, Homespun, based on ethically sourced cashmere, I knew that there was the chance to open up to totally different businesses,” she explains.
The store is a round up of businesses all under one roof; a café, bar, deli, florist, homewares and fashion. The Greenroom offers beautiful flowers and plants, while Pascale Homewares will fast become your go to for interior inspiration.
The interiors at New Street Market are simplistic and trendy; exposed wood and bare brick. It provides a relaxed atmosphere to browse, shop and socialise. As small businesses, collections will change frequently, often with the season, meaning there is always something new to discover.
Sam add: “As we are all such small businesses, we can quickly change our offer to suit our customer. For example, this is the first time Homespun has offered homewares and they’re flying out so we shall definitely increase this area. Likewise The Canteen can quickly respond to customer’s requests. Come for a coffee, bunch of flowers or candles and possibly leave with a cashmere jumper…or just simply browse round our beautiful space!”
