There are plenty of reasons to head on over to Saffron Walden for a day of shopping. With shops galore, markets and art galleries, this ancient market town is packed full of independent businesses to enjoy.
Saffron Walden has held market held since 1141 and it continues the tradition to this very day with market days taking place on Tuesdays and Saturdays every week. As well as the traditional market wares, every Saturday Walden Local Food Market arrives off King Street on Butcher Row from 8.30am – 3.30pm selling fresh, local and mainly organic fruit and vegetables. The popular Curiosity Fair takes place again on the 3 March at the Friends Meeting House. Pop down to enjoy 25 stalls of vintage, antiques, crafts and collectables as well as some tea and cake. The event takes place every other month.
One of the most popular shopping experiences in Saffron Walden is a visit to one of the art galleries. Church Street Gallery is a beautiful and independent gallery managed by local artist, Debbie Scott. They have a range of Original British Printmakers works and affordable contemporary paintings in a range of styles. Keep an eye out for their regular exhibitions held throughout the year. The Saffron Walden Gallery (www.thesaffronwaldengallery.com) is also worth a visit as it displays work by an eclectic mix of contemporary artists, sculptors and ceramicists. Enjoy works by both established and up-and-coming artists.
