Summer in Bedford

Bedford is a beautiful place to visit in the Summer. The banks of the River Great Ouse are perfect for a gentle stroll, the parks are in full bloom and there are events galore to enjoy. The Explore Bedford website features a full list of everything going on in Bedford this Summer, but here are our 2019 highlights:

Bedford Flea Market

For two Sundays this Summer (21 July and 8 September) Bedford Flea takes place on St Paul’s Square. Inspired by French brocante markets, Bedford Flea is a great place to pick up anything from eclectic furniture to collectables, vinyl to vintage. The Affordable Art Market shares the square too, showcasing some of the region’s best artists. Come along and pick up a bargain! www.bedpop.co.uk

Join the Bedford Tour Guides every Sunday for their regular guided tours of the town centre. Each week the walk has a different theme, from WWII to Bedford Castle. Whether you’ve lived in Bedford all your life, or are just visiting for the day, we guarantee you’ll learn something new. Booking required. www.bedfordtourguides.org

Don’t miss the mouth-watering delights of StrEAT Feast at Riverside Bedford on the last Friday of every month. From 4 – 9pm, sample the wares of the many street food traders before a night out in town. We recommend following up with craft beers at Beerfly, cocktails at Bears & Tales, wine and tapas at the Blue Glass or catching a show at the Quarry Theatre or Corn Exchange. @streatfeast

Bedford Kite Festival

At the annual International Kite Festival on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 June, the kites will be sharing Russell Park with the inaugural Festival of Motoring. A feast for the eyes in the skies as well closer to ground. www.bedford.gov.uk

The ever-popular Taste Bedford is back for its third year on Mill Meadows. The free-to-enter annual food and music festival hosts dozens of street food vendors, bars, a professional demo kitchen featuring award-winning chefs, local producers’ stalls, live music on the Victorian bandstand plus circus skills workshops, craft activities and more. A brilliant – and tasty – day out for all the family. www.bedpop.co.uk

Taste Bedford

This year’s Bedfringe takes place at the Quarry Theatre from 15 – 27 July – a record-breaking fortnight of fun. With over 150 events programmed, take a chance on some great comedy, children’s theatre, dance, music and performance. If you’re coming from further afield, why not stay a while? The Embankment, D’Parys Hotel and the Swan Hotel are all within walking distance of the theatre. www.bedfringe.com

Bedford Park Concerts are back in Bedford Park this July, with headliner Rita Ora on Saturday 27 July. Friday’s Café Mambo Ibiza Classics sees the Balearics come to Bedford. Maxi Jazz (Faithless), Judge Jules and Todd Terry will all be bringing the party to the park. Sunday’s peerless Proms in the Park features the London Gala Orchestra, joined by tenor Wynn Evans (who you may recognise from the Go Compare adverts). www.bedfordparkconcerts.co.uk

Bedford’s first Street Arts Festival takes place on Saturday 7 September at Bedford Park this year. The Spectacularts parade will showcase incredible dance, costumes and performances, followed by a party in the park. A great festival to finish off the summer in Bedford in style. www.spectacularts.co.uk
