This month Fletcher celebrates his third birthday! By now you have probably come to realise that he is spoilt rotten, so it’s no surprise that I like to celebrate his birthday in Spaniel style! But it turns out I’m not the only crazy dog lady in town. A recent survey by Lily’s Kitchen, a healthy and organic pet food producer, revealed that 75 per cent of pet owners celebrate their dog’s birthday.
And why shouldn’t we? For most, dogs are a part of the family, loyal companions by our side no matter what. Some pooch parents are happy to splash the cash according to the survey with almost two thirds spending more than £10 on special gifts and decorations, while 60 per cent will be howling out ‘Happy Birthday’.
I’m glad I’m not alone on this, as this year I’m going all out. Time with Fletcher will forever be limited (I wish dogs lived as long as humans), I always think I’ll be lucky if I get 12/14 years, and I’m going to make those the best years a dog can have! He’s not doing bad so far; he has a passport, he has spent a summer living in Ibiza, he visits the beach when ever possible, he has two to three hour walks a day, chicken for dinner and he is never left alone – it’s not a bad life! But for his birthday, I’ll be buying new tennis balls (we lose them on a daily basis) and a huge bone, cooking his favourite dinner and organising a puppy paw-ty with his friends.
I’ll be inviting best bud Bruno (and his adorable puppy son Hugo), Murphy, girlfriend Juno, cheeky chappy Chewy (the happiest Lab ever), and new friend Lila. We’ll be going on Fletcher’s favourite walk in the village of Debden, Essex, which has a lake (though I’m not sure he’s supposed to get in it, but he always finds a way through the fence), lots of fields, a forest and stream – it’s basically a dog’s dream!
There will be doggy treats, fresh water and lots of playing and paddling. We’ll also be raising a bone to Fletcher’s Pointer friend Tally who sadly passed away at the end of last month. She will be really missed, especially by Fletch!
Here’s to Fletcher’s best birthday yet!
