Find the best brunch on the North Norfolk coast. Enjoy breakfast on the beach in Norfolk. Eggs, fry ups and cake. Something for all tastes.
We continue to navigate our way around North Norfolk by the best places to eat. Lunch and dinner that is, I don’t remember anyone ever going out for brunch when I was growing up? This is definitely a new century thing. Not even McDonalds have cottoned on to this one yet, still maintaining a clear cut off window, all be it a instantaneous switch from the breakfast menu to lunch.
Is brunch a growing section of the eating out market in the UK?
The full English remains as strong as ever. Extending this offering to the all-day breakfast is perhaps the simplest and laziest way to offer a “brunch” option to those too lazy or too busy to get seated before 11am.
New on the scene are the cross over dishes, half way between a traditional breakfast dish and a lunch dish. Enter the wonderfully delicious ‘eggs benedict’ and its various variants including a surprising range of non-meat or fish options. Fast forward to 2019, and be amazed what someone can do with an avocado!
With this has gone the traditional kitchen ideals of service, a breakfast service, and lunch service, etc. Now kitchens are expected to provide food from opening to closing, without the windows for prep (or cleaning), so doing it well is difficult, and to be championed.
So who does it best in North Norfolk?
We loved the following places, and while I make no excuses for the list being personal, it is. We visited these places over the summer of 2019 anonymously and paid our bills (no freebies)!
The Old Rock Shop Bistro
10 Hamilton Rd, Cromer NR27 9HL | Tel: 01263 511926
Not a looker from the outside and not North Norfolk’d on the inside, more cafe than bistro but what it lacks in ambiance, it amply makes up for by having sourced, cooked to perfection and served beautiful locally produced dishes. Free range eggs from local suppliers, regional ham and fish, including seafood. Coffee was good and the staffs attention to detail and customer needs was just right. Very reasonably priced. There are a small number of covers so it does get busy. www.theoldrockshopbistro.co.uk/
Back to the Garden
Letheringsett, Holt NR25 7JJ | Tel: 01263 715996
Venture a little inland to the spectacular barn, deli, farm shop and restaurant at Back to the Garden in Letheringsett, near Holt, and you will not be disappointed. The brunch menu includes offerings from the Cley Smokehouse which are always to be recommended. Their full English is one of the best in Norfolk, and so it should be with an in-house butchery. This is a breath-taking beautiful barn conversion on an enormous scale. Open for brunch 8.15-11am Mondays to Saturdays, 9-11.30am Sundays. www.back-to-the-garden.co.uk/weekly-menu/
Wiveton Hall Fruit Farm Café
Wiveton Hall, 1 Marsh Lane, Wiveton, Holt NR25 7TE | Tel: 01263 740515
Now open until 20 December then closed until March, the cafe serves a great selection of dishes in a very special location. My favourite was the farm grown asparagus with duck eggs. A near perfect artisan brunch dish, served with excellent coffee. You will need to book at weekends. OK so it’s awash with tourists these days and as a local you may want to avoid peak silly season on the coast, but do go, the view is still one of the best in the world and it’s on your doorstep! www.wivetonhall.co.uk/restaurant-cafe/
1-3 Shirehall Plain, Holt NR25 6BG | Tel: 01263 711400
We really should be on commission from Byfords by now, but all we have is a Byfords passport with a 10 per cent discount! I keep coming back to recommending this place, and they keep on delivering great quality food and service. An excellent brunch menu is served daily from 8am and right through to 3pm on Sundays. The location and decor are classic rustic bistro. Lovely atmosphere, polite attentive staff and prices around £10 a plate. It’s the only one of our selection to offer a breakfast pizza! www.byfords.org.uk/cafe/menu/breakfast-menu
We could not finish without a quick mention for the Caravan on Blakeney Quay. They cook the most wonderful breakfast baps, all day throughout the summer season. They are excellent value for money at just £5 and delicious washed down with a mug of tea.
