It’s that time of year, there’s a nip in the air, the leaves are turning gold, your tempted to grab your coat and go for a bracing stroll, and when you get back it’s time to fire up the flames and settle in for the evening.
As a former pupil at the village primary school, I have vivid memories of school assemblies. I used to sit at the back, out of sight from the teachers so I could chat to my fellow classmates. We used to sing hymns from a small paperback book consisting of missing pages, ripped pages or a cover and no pages. One of those hymns was called ‘Autumn Days’. Remember it?
I won’t attempt to attach a voice recording to this article of me singing it because cracks in windows can cause an unwanted draught during this time of year. ‘Silk inside a chestnut shell’, ‘the grass is jewelled’ and ‘scent of gardens when the rain’s been falling’ were just some of the delightful lyrics used to describe the year’s most colourful season.
However, it’s not all about verses of hymns, as autumn is all about action in the world of wine. In the northern hemisphere, it’s harvest season. Grapes are being plucked from the vines in the vineyard by dozens of skilled workers, ready to be taken to the winery, where the magic of fermentation takes place.
A colourful season requires some colourful wines, so here’s some wines to ‘fall’ in love with:
Heredad del Rey Monastrell/Syrah Seleccion Reservada
Rich and oaky, Heredad del Rey Selección Reservada has complex aromas of black fruit and spicy cinnamon. The palate is juicy broad and fruity with oaky mulberry and blueberry character and a plush smoky finish.
Les Dauphins Côtes du Rhône Villages
Perfectly structured, with aromas of ripe summer fruits balanced by rich fruit flavours and hints of pepper and spice, with a long, generous finish: all the hallmarks of classic Rhône. The perfect partner for a hearty beef stew.
Broglia Gavi di Gavi DOCG
Great texture and precision, with distinctive greengage and almond notes on the palate. Fresh and dry, this is particularly characterful Gavi.
Aged in American oak barrels for hints of sweetness and vanilla on the finish, this entry-level single malt is sure to delight whisky lovers at every level. It’s a richly warming dram with sibtle hints of smoke, sweet spice and toffee apple.
Martell Médaillon VSOP Cognac
Made from a skilful blend of mature eaux-de-vie from the four finest Cognac regions, its character is smooth and mellow with complex, rounded and woody aromas.
