The region’s coastline is coming alive with colour as we head into carnival season. If you’re planning a visit to the beach this summer, make sure you tie in your trip with one of these fantastic events…
30 July – 7 August, Sheringham Carnival, Norfolk
Kicking off the August carnival season is Sheringham, with a whole week of festivities that will keep the family entertained. Dance along at the Battle of the Bands, take part in street races, beach sports, sand castle competition and cheer on your entry in the duck race.
6 August, Wells Carnival, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk
Fancy dress and floats at the ready, the Wells Carnival returns once again for a fun and light-hearted celebration. The carnival stays true to its long tradition with a classic carnival procession and crowning of the carnival royals. The day will include seaside activities such as sandcastle building and town crier competition. In the lead up to the carnival there will be entertainment across six days from 29 July featuring a teddy bears picnic, costume making workshops, raft race, history walks plus live music in the evenings and the popular ‘Screen on the Green’.
13-15 August, Aldeburgh Carnival, Suffolk
This carnival has paraded through the streets of Aldeburgh for what is expected to be at least 170 years. It takes place over the course of an entire weekend and emboide a true carnival spirit with a float parade, carnival queen, lantern procession, stalls and a firework display on the beach.
13-21 August, Clacton Carnival, Essex
Festivities kick off on Saturday 13 August at 6pm with the carnival procession at West Road Car Park along the seafront to Victoria Road. The following days see plenty of fun family events including a car boot sale, Donkey Derby at Alton Park School on Monday 15 August, sandcastle competition (2pm), egg throwing (7pm) and carnival beer dig (7.30pm) on West Beach on Tuesday 16 August, live music, carnival fete, pitch and putt and a half marathon!
13-19 August, Cromer Carnival, Norfolk
The carnival is a week long celebration dedicated to family fun, including a picnic, novelty dog show, fancy dress competition, American car show and mini beer and ale festival. The carnival procession takes place on the Wednesday 17 August evening. The famous Children’s Week is a week prior.
14 August, Downham Market Water Festival, Norfolk
Ok it’s not quite coastal, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun, make a splash as the Downham Market Water Festival returns for its sixth year. It takes place on the banks of the Great Ouse. Cheer on the dragon boat race as well as enjoying entertainment on dry land.
19 August, Thorpeness Regetta and Fireworks, Suffolk
The all day event brings friends and families together for live music, BBQ, fireworks and much more. The annual events has a great sense of community spirit and is one of the biggest events of the year.
20 August, Southend Carnival, Essex
Each year over 20,000 people gather on Southend’s seafront to wathc over 60 floats and live acts make their way from Southchurch Park to Shorefield Road. The carnival begins at 6.45pm and finishes at 9pm. The carnival has a buzzing and vibrant atmosphere as dancers and acts make their way along the seafront, cheered on by flag waving crowds.
9-11, The 6th Wells Pirate Festival, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk
There’s never been a better excuse to don a pirate hat and eye patch as the Wells Pirate Festival sails back into town. There will be fantastic activities from the Smugglers Cove on the Quay with boat trips and weapon demonstrations, follow the treasure trail, visit the photography exhibition in the Sackhouse or dance away to live music while having a rum cocktail or two!
10-11 September, Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival, Norfolk
The Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival is not to be missed! Completely free to attend, the festival sees two days of activities on the historic South Quay. Go aboard ships, listen to live shanty folk music across three stages, enjoy street theatre, exhibitions, demonstrations in the marquee and browse the craft stalls. There’s also lots of children’s activities!
