Matt Dicks, a WSET qualified Beers, Wines and Spirits Specialist for Waitrose and Eastlife’s columnist, tells us how to impress with wine this Mother’s Day…
A little note for Mum
Dear Mum,
Happy Mother’s Day! I expect you’ll never read this as I dare say Dad will be using the iPad to book yet another cruise. Even greater, I’m sure you be mortified to learn I’m writing about you in East Life magazine! Despite the fact I tend to be all over the country doing most things alcohol related, I’m eternally grateful for everything you’ve done and I know you’ll keep a watchful eye on my Facebook page! You’ll be pleased to know I’ve made a commitment to travel back home to see you more, and if you happen to stumble across this article, I know I’ll have to stick to it.
So here’s a selection of drinks that I’m sure you’ll really like, and in keeping with your love of Gin; I’ve even included a nice Suffolk surprise for you. I’m sure there are Mother’s across the country who would be happy to have a glass raised to them with these too. So put your feet up, let Dad get on with the list of decorating that you’ve given him and enjoy the day, preferably with a glass in your hand.
Love Matthew xxx
Wines for Mother’s Day
Nyetimber Classic Cuvée
In my opinion Mothers deserve the best, so why not crack open a bottle of fizz that’s been rated amongst the best. Using traditional grapes varieties and traditional winemaking, this elegant and fashionable bubbly is perfect for raising a glass to your mum.
Adnams Copper House Gin
Suffolk’s dramatic coastline is the home to many delightful towns and villages, including picturesque Southwold. We’ll be exploring this part of the region later in the year, but for now we’re going to focus on a gin-tastic drink. Coastal brewery Adnams has turned its hand to making artisan spirits in its fascinating Copper House distillery, well worth a visit if you’re over that way. My mother loves drinks which are floral and refreshing, so this will go down well with its sweet orange, cardamom and hibiscus flowers.
Tilimuqui Fairtrade Single Vineyard Torrontés
This crisp and aromatic white will be a firm favourite with mothers who enjoy something delicate and fruity. Produced in the Salta region in northern Argentina, this fruit-filled delight will remind you of those favourite holidays you took with your parents when you were young. Offering fragrant, gently spicy, citrus-fruit flavours, it also incorporates Waitrose’s commitment to treating people fairly, such as through working with the Fairtrade scheme. Something not only you, but your mother would be proud of.
Aspall Premier Cru Dry Cyder
For Sunday lunch my family loves a roast pork dinner and this is often accompanied with a glass of Cider. Aspall Premier Cru is the flagship of their range with a clean, light aroma of dessert apples. If mum is out round her friends and you fancy a sneaky trip to the curry house, then it will work perfectly with that too.
