Le Concert Spirituel Herve Niquet conductor Benevolo Mass: Si Deus pro nobis Interspersed with plainchant, and choral and instrumental music by Monteverdi, Frescobaldi and Palestrina Orazio Benevolo’s mass is an astonishing spectacle and a ravishing listening experience, with eight choirs (each with their own conductor and instrumental ensemble) arrayed around Ely Cathedral’s Octagon, submerging the audience under waves of polyphony. Performed in a sequence alongside sumptuous choral motets and instrumental flourishes from his Italian musical forbears and leavened with the purity of plainchant, this is a bewitching, extravagant highpoint of the Italian baroque. The Aldeburgh Festival returns to Ely Cathedral for the first time in over fifty years to present an extraordinary multi-choir mass setting. Benevolo has been little heard in modern times, until Herve Niquet’s ensemble’s recent championing of his richly textured and highly original sacred works.
